IPO jargon can overwhelm beginners. Use the Jio IPO as a working example.
The terms
- DRHP (draft red herring prospectus): the draft offer document filed with SEBI. Jio's was filed on June 19, 2026.
- RHP (red herring prospectus): the near-final document issued before the IPO opens.
- Fresh issue: new shares issued, with money going to the company. Jio's issue is fully fresh.
- OFS (offer for sale): existing shareholders sell. Jio has none.
- Price band: the range for bidding.
- Lot: the minimum bid size, 12 shares for Jio.
- Anchor investors: large institutions bidding a day before opening.
- QIB, NII, retail: investor categories.
- Subscription: how many times bids exceeded shares offered.
- GMP: unofficial grey market premium.
- Allotment: the process that decides who gets shares.
- Listing: the first day of trading on exchanges.
- Registrar: the agency that handles allotment, here KFin Technologies.
Why these terms matter
They shape what you can know and when. For example, a fresh issue adds money to the company, while an OFS does not.
