IBPS PO Prelims Sarkari Exam 2026: Sectional Cut-Offs and Speed Building Hacks

It is essential that candidates preparing for the next IBPS PO cycle know about the sectional cut-off system and build their speed. Prelims is more than simply a test of getting correct answers, it is a test of getting the right answers in the correct time frame.

The Common Recruitment Process for Probationary Officers/Management Trainees (CRP PO/MT-XVI) is the IBPS PO Prelims Sarkari Exam 2026. The official calendar of IBPS had the Preliminary Examination from 22nd August 2026 and the Main Examination on 4th October 2026. IBPS has also published the Preliminary result status from 23 September 2026.

It is essential that candidates preparing for the next IBPS PO cycle know about the sectional cut-off system and build their speed. Prelims is more than simply a test of getting correct answers, it is a test of getting the right answers in the correct time frame.

IBPS PO Prelims 2026 Exam Pattern

Three sections are tested in the IBPS PO Preliminary Exam:

  • English Language – 30 questions; 30 marks
  • Quantitative Aptitude – 35 questions; 35 marks
  • Reasoning Ability – 35 questions; 35 marks
  • The total number of questions and marks are 100 and 100 respectively.
  • Time allowed: 60 minutes

The examination has separate sectional time limits. It means that candidates are not allowed to carry over any time left to the other sections. The Prelims is a qualifying exam where candidates fulfilling the requisite conditions are shortlisted for the main examination.

What Are Sectional Cut-Offs in IBPS PO?

Section-wise cut-off implies that the candidate needs to obtain minimum qualifying marks in all sections, including the cut-off marks in total. An excellent score in Reasoning alone cannot help to offset an extremely poor score in English.

Official IBPS PO prelims 2026 cut-off is announced by IBPS post-examination. Previous year’s cut-off marks can be taken into consideration but just as a reference since the scores may differ depending on their level of difficulty and performance of the candidate. The target should be more than the minimum qualifying mark.

Why Sectional Performance Matters

One of the mistakes made by many applicants is that they devote too much time to their strongest subject. For example, an applicant who excels at Reasoning could try to solve complex problems, whereas the section of English gets neglected.

The way out of this problem would be to work towards two targets in preparing for your test:

  • Clear the minimum requirement in every section.
  • Build additional marks from the sections where you are more comfortable.

Speed Building Hacks for IBPS PO Prelims

  1. Practise With a Timer

Speed cannot be acquired just by studying answers. Solve sectional test papers with a timer. First concentrate on solving the questions right and then slowly decrease the time.

For instance, solve 20 Quantitative Aptitude questions and check your time along with the accuracy. Keep repeating the same process till your time is improved and your accuracy doesn't drop drastically.

  1. Use the Easy-First Approach

Do not try to answer the questions in the way in which they appear on the screen. Try to identify those questions which are solved by your standard procedures.

For Reasoning, it is better to start with easy problems such as Inequalities, Syllogism, Direction Sense and other easy questions. For Quantitative Aptitude, it is advisable to start with Simplification, Approximation, Number Series and other Arithmetic questions.

  1. Build Section-Wise Shortcuts

Shortcuts must be created only for those concepts that you are well-versed in.

In the case of Quant, practice squaring, cubing, percentage conversion, fractions, and multiplication. It will save time on calculations.

In the case of Reasoning, learn the conventional methods of solving questions based on inequality, syllogism, coding-decoding, blood relations, and seating arrangement.

In the case of English, build vocabulary, grammar and improve reading speed rather than learning from a list.

  1. Improve Reading Speed

Questions based on the English language can take a lot of time if the candidate keeps reading the same sentence or paragraph again and again.

Read editorials, articles related to banks and small paragraphs. In reading comprehension practice, first try to get the main idea and then find out what the question wants to know.

Do not waste much time trying to understand one unfamiliar word because the rest of the context can help you answer the question.

  1. Maintain an Error Log

After each mock test, write down:

  • Questions answered incorrectly
  • Questions that took too much time
  • Questions left despite being solvable
  • Calculation mistakes
  • Questions attempted through an inefficient method

This will help you understand whether there is a problem of knowledge or a problem of speed. If the problem was of speed and knowledge is clear then more practice is needed and vice versa.

Mock Test Strategy for IBPS PO

The full mock test must be started only once the basic concepts and sectional tests become moderately good. Preparation is not measured by the mock test result alone.

Post every test, there must be an analysis of three figures - attempts, accuracy, and time taken.

Candidates who have made a lot of attempts with low accuracy should not concentrate on attempting more questions. Question selection and minimization of mistakes is the better approach. Candidates with high accuracy and low attempts must improve their question selection and calculation speed.

Different combinations of section order can be tried in practice tests, although the sectional time constraint will remain the same in the final exam.

Section-Wise Preparation Focus

English Language: Stress more on reading comprehension, error detection, fillers, para-based questions, phrase substitution and vocabulary.

Quantitative Aptitude considers Concentrate more on simplification, approximation, number series, data interpretation and arithmetic like percentage, ratio, average, profit & loss, time & work and time speed distance.

Reasoning Ability: Practice puzzles and seating arrangements along with inequality, syllogism, coding-decoding, direction sense, blood relation and miscellaneous reasoning.

The goal is to have enough practice in every type of question so that one knows if one has to solve it or skip it or come back to it in the sectional time provided.

Conclusion

Preparation for IBPS PO Prelims must have an equilibrium between speed, accuracy, and sectional performance. The candidate needs to practice regularly by taking mock tests and then analyzing their mistakes and improving upon question selection. This is an important Sarkari Exam that requires regular preparation in all sections. Rather than relying on the estimated cut-off scores, stress on accuracy.
